born to an unloving family in a dilapidated plantation in georgia, jonathan had a trying childhood full of abuse, bullying, and escapism found in forbidden books. due to his experiences, jonathan grew to be obsessed with the psychology of fear.
in an attempt to have a normal life, he pursued academia, intent on studying the effects of fear. after one class in which jonathan fired a real gun, he was dismissed from his position. this was the final straw. he went off the grid, working on a potent hallucinogenic agent that would project the victim's worst fears.
re-emerging as the scarecrow, jonathan went on a quest of revenge against those who betrayed him and those who could use the power of fear. his plans were foiled by batman, but not for long. arkham is such an easy place to escape from, after all.
